Cannabigerol (CBG) is a cannabinoid found in the Cannabis genus of plants. Cannabigerol is found in higher concentrations in hemp rather than in varieties of Cannabis cultivated for high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content and their corresponding psychoactive properties. By the time most strains of cannabis are cultivated, they will have trace amounts of CBG, somewhere below 1%.
Although less popular than CBD and THC, Cannabigerol or CBG is also worthy of attention. As a cannabinoid, it may offer some unique properties that will potentially help some medical conditions as well.
Cannabigerol occurs in larger amounts in the industrial hemp plant while it’s in lower concentrations in Cannabis that are medically grown. When the plant is harvested too early, the CBG will be higher than the CBD or the THC in the plants.
As a phytocannabinoid, Cannabigerol is just as the cannabidiol and the THC and it’s a non-psychoactive so you don’t get the same high. While it happens naturally in the cannabis plant, it’s not readily produced in the body thus it’s not a part of the endocannabinoid family. Interestingly, the cannabigerol is the related chemical that forms the CBD and the THC that are converted to the other forms of the plant. AS these are exposed to UV light or heat sources for long periods of time they convert to the more neutral form of the CBD or the THC.
There are a variety of health benefits that Italian researchers have tested over the years. Tested on patients suffering from inflammatory syndrome. The study concluded that CBG may also benefit those who are struggling with the condition. Other studies in the Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics have shown that it can also increase the drainage of the fluid from eyes due to glaucoma.
Cannabigerol has also been shown to help with anti-emetic and has shown some promise in reducing nausea. It also helps to slow the growth of skin tumors. Per Italian researchers, since it’s non-psychoactive, it may also slow the progression of colon cancer.
Further studies have also shown that it has an anti-inflammatory as well as analgesic powers that can help to reduce many serious health conditions.
CBG has been classified in the category as an antagonist and is able to help counteract the psychoactive effects of the THC. Cannabigerol or CBG has shown great promise on the medical front and is well worth learning more about in regards to medicinal purposes.
